Quilting is an art form and as such should be cared for in a manner that will preserve its elements for generations to come.
Also proper care for your quilt bed sets is needed so that their fabric colors and quality will as much as possible remain the same across all the different parts of the set like the pillow cases, bed skirts, shams etc will age at the same rate and will not look like they came from different sets.
In caring for your quilt bed sets keep in mind that regular laundry detergents are quite harsh and may fade the color of your quilts as well as hasten the wear of the fabrics used.
Using gentle washing agents like Orvus quilt soaps or Mountain Mist Ensure which can be bought in sewing and quilt shops will delay fading and wear that you would normally get through the use of regular detergents. Others wash their quilts by hand while other opt to use a washing machine.
Washing by hand is ideal but very tiring as well as time consuming due to the heaviness of the items when wet. Quilt bed sets can be washed in washing machines provided the items can circulate in the water freely and one follows the proper process. First off fill the tub with lukewarm water then add the gentle soap and mix the solution till the soap is more or less evenly distributed. Place the quilt or parts of the quilt bed sets in the tub and turn the washing machine on in gentle cycle until the items are thoroughly soaked. Stop the machine and let it rest for around 10 minutes.
After that, turn the washing machine on again for another gentle agitation for a couple of minutes then rinse and gently spin. If the items smell and feel like it still has soap residue repeat the rinse and spin cycles.
Lastly drying quilted items are quite challenging because we do not want to strain the stitching. If we place very wet pieces of your quilt bed sets in the dryer popped threads may result. The most practical way is to air dry the items initially to take away most of the moisture hence the weight that can stretch the stitching. Once this is done you can then have it fluffed in the dryer on the air setting with no heat. With these washing tips your quilt bed sets will definitely remind you of special moments for years to come.
